Evaluation of topical anesthesia with sedation in cataract surgery

Introduction

Evaluation of comfort and safety of patent and surgeon during the cataract surgery under topical anesthesia with sedation.

Material and methods

106 consecutive patients operated on in the period of two months without previous selection, were evaluated. Cataract surgery was performed in all patients with phacoemulsification in one-day surgery. Outcome measured included patient's and surgeons evaluation.

Results

All procedures were performed in one-day surgery, irrespective of additional patients disorders. Combination of topical anesthesia with individual sedation gave a safe surgical course. 4 patients during surgery and 25 in the first postoperative day reported the pain. The mean score of patients evaluation scale was 4.7 (scale 1-5 points). The surgeons felt comfortable during the procedure. No major intraoperative complications were observed.
