Diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease prior to cataract surgery as a strategy to optimize refractive outcomes

Aim
To assess the impact of dry eye disease on refractive errors following cataract surgery.
Material and methods
Twenty-eight patients undergoing cataract surgery were included in the study. Of these, 46% (n = 13) were preoperatively diagnosed with dry eye disease and received appropriate treatment. The remaining 15 patients formed the control group. All of them underwent biometric measurements twice, including the calculation of intraocular lens power. Refraction and refractive errors were evaluated one month post-surgery.
Results
A significant improvement in visual acuity was observed in both groups following surgical treatment. In the study group, treatment of dry eye disease resulted in a significant reduction in the mean absolute error (0.37 ±0.36 D vs. 0.23 ±0.34 D; p = 0.036). No significant differences were found between the biometric measurements of the study and control groups. These results are consistent with previous studies.
Conclusions
Preoperative diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease play a crucial role in reducing refractive errors after cataract surgery.
