Introduction

To evaluate the results of cataract surgery in previously vitrectomized eyes.

Material and methods

In 41 eyes, that had undergone prior vitrectomy, extracapsular cataract extraction was done and intraocular lens was implanted. The average time between operations was 14,5 months (range from 2 months to 6 years). The mean follow-up was 19±12,2 months (range from 4 months to 4 years).

Results

Statistically significant improvement was observed in visual acuity after cataract extraction and IOL implantation, compared to the results after vitrectomy. The most frequent complication was posterior capsule opacification, which occured in 9 eyes (22%).

Conclusions

The results show, that intaocular lens implantation in eyes after vitrectomy is safe and achieved visual acuity is similar or better, than before cataract formation.
