Introduction

Defocus curves (DCs) provide information on the expected range of binocular visual acuity (VA) after implantation of a given intraocular lens (IOL). The aim of the study was to evaluate bilateral DC after phacoemulsification with implantation of various IOLs.

Material and methods

The study consisted of 100 patients who underwent phacoemulsification in both eyes with implantation of various IOLs and met the inclusion criteria. Patients were assigned to four study groups: group 1 – extended depth of focus (EDoF) IOLs (n = 20), group 2 – multifocal IOLs (MIOLs) (n = 30),
group 3 – bifocal IOLs (n = 25), group 4 – monofocal IOLs (n = 25).
All patients were examined before the surgery and 1 month and 6 months postoperatively. In all patients, the DC was examined.

Results

Distance visual acuity was highest with EDoF (0.98), MIOL (0.98), and monofocal IOLs (0.93), and lower with bifocal IOLs (0.82).
At the intermediate distance (−1.5 D, 66 cm), EDoF, MIOL, and bifocal IOLs provided similar visual acuity (0.79–0.80), whereas monofocal IOLs performed significantly worse (0.50; p < 0.0001). Near visual acuity (−2.5 D, 40 cm) was highest with MIOLs (0.85), followed by bifocal (0.62), EDoF (0.56), and monofocal IOLs (0.29) (p < 0.0001).

Conclusions

The best binocular distance VA was achieved with EDoF, MIOLs, and monofocal lenses. Binocular intermediate VA was highest in the EDoF and MIOL groups, whereas binocular near VA was best in the MIOL group.
